Back-to-school nights
Both kids had their back-to-school nights this week. Alex's consisted of 2 hours of changing classes (8 periods, 10 minutes per period, 5 minutes between classes). It was exhausting! At least it's my old school so I could easily find the rooms. I don't know what parents did who didn't know their way around.
Alex has a great group of teachers. I particularly like his English teacher. She seems to make a real effort to know the kids, and could easily tell all of us parents something little about our children. She said just about everything Alex says has to do with his guitar (yes, he's still loving his guitar!). When I pointed out that a little "snapshot" that he wrote on the board actually didn't have anything to do with his guitar (it said something about Christmas morning with his 4 year old sister), she said, "Oh, but remember, that's the day he GOT his guitar!" LOL. He's also taking a 2D-CAD drafting course that seems really cool. He's thinking of going into architecture and this gives him a taste of what that might be like. If he continues to take drafting courses, he'll eventually be able to use this $30,000 machine in the classroom that takes a 3D image from the computer and makes it into a little plastic model. Pretty cool. Everything else was pretty standard high school stuff.
Back to School night at Children's House included the children, so it was mass chaos, but great to see Kate playing with her friends and to be able to put faces and names together. This year Kate gets to go into the elementary classroom to take recorder lessons with Mr. Richard. He said she's his "go to girl" and has picked it up very quickly. He commented that she seems very self-assured and mature for her age.
